Upgrade Antics: A Hilarious Ubuntu Odyssey

The Distrowrite Project is thrilled to share with you a fun home lab trial that will have you chuckling and learning at the same time. Today, we're embarking on a journey to upgrade our fresh virtual (Cockpit) installation of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (KDE flavour) to the shiny new Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, all without a single manual terminal input. Buckle up, because this is going to be an adventure!

First, let's address the elephant in the room: the risks. Upgrading your operating system can be a delicate process, and we don't want any unexpected surprises. So, before we dive in, make sure you have a solid backup of your important data. You know, just in case things don't go as smoothly as we hope. And if you're feeling particularly adventurous, you might want to consider setting up a separate test environment to try this out first. Safety first, my friends!

Now, let's get to the good stuff. To begin, we opened up Cockpit on our browser and created a Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (KDE flavour) virtual machine. During the installation, we enabled "Unattended Upgrades". This feature allows for automatic security updates. 

Here's where the fun really begins. We're going to let the system do all the heavy lifting for us. We ran our virtual machine, logged in and watched out for the "Automatic Upgrades" notification. The system automatically detected the availability of the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS upgrade, downloaded the necessary files, and seamlessly transitioned our system to the new version. We then needed to reboot the virtual machine.

Once the virtual machine was rebooted, the system alerted us that the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS upgrade was available. Then the above automated process was repeated.

On our final reboot, we had the current Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (as Kubuntu 24.04 LTS).

Now, I know what you're thinking: "But what if something goes wrong?" Well, my friend, that's where the real comedy comes in. If the upgrade hits a snag, Your system will dutifully inform you, and you can either try to troubleshoot the issue or simply roll back to your previous Ubuntu 20.04 LTS installation. It's like a choose-your-own-adventure, but with a technological twist!

In the end, we had a shiny new Ubuntu 24.04 LTS system, complete with all the latest features and security updates. And the best part? We didn't have to lift a finger (well, except to reboot the virtual machine but who's counting?).

To our surprise, the double automatic distribution upgrade from Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS was successful! The entire process took a long time and required triple reboots, but in the end, we were able to achieve our goal without any manual terminal input.

So, there you have it, folks – a fun home lab trial that will have you laughing and learning at the same time. Remember, as with any system upgrade, it's important to proceed with caution and have a solid backup plan in place.
