GNU Nano 9.0: Smoother Scrolling and Smarter Editing
Table of contents:-
Hello, fellow tinkerers and power users! Whether you’re a corporate sysadmin keeping servers humming on BSD, a private Linux enthusiast crafting scripts at home, or anyone working with Unix-like systems and open-source tools worldwide, GNU nano remains the lightweight, no-nonsense text editor that just gets the job done. On 8 April 2026 the team released version 9.0, codenamed “Le bonheur est dans le pré”, and we’ve been putting it through its paces on Arch Linux running on Awesome Window Manager in a virtual machine.
Smooth Scrolling
The biggest change you’ll notice straight away is the new horizontal scrolling behaviour. When the cursor nears the right edge of the screen, every line now scrolls sideways together—just far enough to keep the cursor comfortably in view. Gone is the old jerky, single-line shuffle. If you prefer the classic behaviour, simply use the `--solosidescroll` command-line option or add `set solosidescroll` to your nanorc file.
Flexible Navigation
You can now scroll the entire viewport sideways in steps of one tab size with the handy shortcuts M-< and M->. The M-Left, M-Right, M-Up and M-Down keys have also become fully rebindable, giving you even more control over your workflow. (A quick check of `man nanorc` will tell you whether these keys should switch buffers as they once did.)
Refined Macros & Toggles
Macro recording is now more forgiving: if you stop recording immediately after starting, the action is cancelled and your existing macro stays safely in place. Better still, most feature toggles no longer interrupt a chain of ^K cuts or M-6 copies—only the M-K cut-from-cursor toggle still behaves as before. These small tweaks make repetitive editing sessions noticeably less frustrating.
Mouse-Friendly Controls
When you launch nano with both `--mouse` and `--indicator` enabled, you can click anywhere in the scrollbar area to jump roughly to that position in the buffer. It’s a quick, visual way to navigate long files without touching the keyboard.
In short, GNU nano 9.0 keeps the editor’s legendary lightness while adding thoughtful refinements that benefit everyone from beginners to seasoned professionals. These updates prove once again that the GNU nano project listens to its global community and delivers exactly the improvements that matter in real-world use.
