Solus has always stood out in the Linux world for its thoughtful balance of modern polish and rock-solid stability, and the latest release feels like a gentle breeze after a stormy year. Launched as the first update of 2026, Solus 4.9 “Serenity” brings a host of under-the-hood refinements that make everyday system management smoother, while keeping the friendly, out-of-the-box experience that longtime fans adore. Whether you are a seasoned open-source tinkerer or someone simply seeking a reliable daily driver, this release quietly improves the things you interact with most.

Core Improvements in Solus 4.9 Serenity

One of the smartest changes in Solus 4.9 is the move to systemd preset files for handling default services. Previously, services were enabled by creating symbolic links in target.wants directories, which sometimes led to confusing status displays and tricky management. The new preset approach cleans this up beautifully, making it far more intuitive for both users and administrators to see exactly what is running and why.

Another welcome alignment with broader Linux conventions is the switch of the default privileged group from sudo to wheel. This small but significant tweak reduces the need for custom patches on many packages and brings Solus into line with what most software expects, easing future maintenance without any noticeable change for everyday use.

Boot and encryption have also received careful attention. On legacy non-EFI systems, GRUB has been updated to version 2.14, now supporting Argon2 encryption with LUKS2 volumes for stronger security.

The Calamares installer, bumped to version 3.4.2, now enables hybrid bootloader installation on older hardware, seamlessly chainloading systemd-boot and GRUB2 where needed.

It also defaults to LUKS2 for disk encryption, which not only offers improved security but opens the door to future TPM-based automatic unlocking. To future-proof things further, the default EFI partition size has been increased to 2 GB, comfortably accommodating growing firmware modules, kernel updates, and even NVIDIA driver packages without any last-minute space worries.

Under the bonnet, the kernel story is equally solid. Solus 4.9 ships with Linux 6.18.21 as the primary option, with the long-term support kernel temporarily matching that version.

Thanks to close collaboration with the AerynOS project, the kernel configuration and patch set deliver broader hardware enablement right out of the box. This is paired with Mesa 26.0.4 for excellent graphics performance across a wide range of devices. Default applications stay refreshingly current too: Firefox 149.0.2, LibreOffice 25.8.6.2, and Thunderbird 149.0.2 ensure you have the latest security fixes and productivity features from day one.

Enhanced Desktop Experiences

Solus 4.9 continues to offer four beautifully curated desktop editions, each tailored to different tastes and hardware needs.

Budgie users receive version 10.9.4, which remains delightfully familiar yet benefits from the overall system refinements. A lovely new touch is the switch to ptyxis as the default terminal, bringing a cleaner, more modern feel to the command line. Excitingly, Budgie 10.10 is on the near horizon and will be Wayland-only, marking another step toward a fully modern graphics stack.

GNOME fans will enjoy the 49.5 update from the Brescia series, packed with numerous bug fixes that deliver an even smoother daily experience. Like Budgie, GNOME 50 is coming soon and will also drop X11 support entirely in favour of Wayland.

GNOME 49.5

The Plasma edition shines with KDE Frameworks 6.24.0, Plasma 6.6.4, and KDE Gear 25.12.3. Recent Plasma 6.6 improvements include a new and improved on-screen keyboard, the ability to extract text from screenshots in Spectacle, Wi-Fi connection via QR code scanning, plus enhanced accessibility options and settings. Plasma 6.8, due in October 2026, will also become Wayland-only, and the team encourages users to test the Wayland session and report any issues to help refine it further.

Plasma 6.6.4

For those who prefer lightweight efficiency, the Xfce edition arrives with the latest 4.20 series, emphasising stability and speed on modest hardware. It continues to provide a full-featured yet resource-friendly environment with no major disruptions since the previous release.

Across all editions, the focus remains on sensible defaults and a cohesive feel, so you spend less time configuring and more time actually using your computer.

Downloading and Installing Solus 4.9

Getting started with Solus 4.9 could hardly be simpler. Four editions are available: Budgie for feature-rich customisation with its dedicated settings app and Raven sidebar; GNOME for a streamlined, modern experience on newer hardware (complete with handy extensions); Plasma for tinkerers who enjoy fine-tuning a sophisticated desktop; and Xfce for a fast, friendly option on lighter machines.

Minimum system requirements are modest: 10 GB of free disk space, 4 GB RAM, a 64-bit x86-64 processor, and any graphics adapter. For the best experience, however, 25 GB of storage, 8 GB RAM, and a quad-core CPU running at 2 GHz or better are recommended, along with UEFI firmware where possible.

Once downloaded, always verify your ISO using the provided hash and GPG signature. This quick check confirms the file arrived intact and untampered, saving potential headaches later. Installation follows the familiar Calamares wizard, now even more capable with the hybrid bootloader and LUKS2 support mentioned earlier. Should you need guidance, the official Help Center and friendly community on Matrix or the forums are ready to lend a hand.

In the end, Solus 4.9 Serenity really does what its name promises: it creates a calm, reliable harbour in the sometimes turbulent world of Linux distributions.
