Sometimes a computer stops playing ball. The desktop won't load, a partition looks poorly, or a Windows machine simply refuses to boot. This is exactly the kind of moment Exton|Defender SRS was built for. It's a Fedora-based rescue and repair system that lives happily on a USB stick, asks nothing of your hard drive, and yet is friendly enough to use as an everyday Linux desktop too. The latest stable release, Build 260718, brings a freshened desktop, a smarter Refracta Snapshot tool, and a neat RAM-booting trick that even its own creator admits he wasn't expecting to crack. Let's take a proper look.
What Exton|Defender SRS Actually Is
Exton|Defender SRS, where SRS stands for Super Rescue System, is a 64-bit Linux Live system built on top of Fedora 44, which itself arrived in April 2026. It's the work of Swedish developer Arne Exton, whose long-running stable of "Exton" distributions has become something of an institution among Linux tinkerers who like their systems fast, self-contained and endlessly customisable.
The whole point of Exton|Defender is admin work. Think partition editing, data recovery after a crash, network diagnostics, or simply poking around a machine that won't start properly any other way. To that end it arrives loaded with the classics: GParted for partitioning, PartImage and FSArchiver for imaging and backup, TestDisk for recovering lost partitions, Ddrescue and Safecopy for coaxing data off failing drives, plus NTFS-3G so Windows filesystems are no obstacle. Midnight Commander sits alongside more conventional file managers for anyone who prefers a classic dual-pane, keyboard-driven workflow, and there's a decent spread of networking tools for chasing down connectivity gremlins.
None of this means Exton|Defender is a narrow, single-purpose tool, though. Because it's genuinely just Fedora underneath, it can double as a full desktop system, complete with Firefox, an email client, media playback and the usual creature comforts. It needs no installation to a hard drive at all; you can boot it from a USB stick or DVD, do your rescue work, and walk away having changed nothing on the host machine. If you do want it to stick around, a hard-drive install is entirely possible, and there's persistence available on USB media too, so your settings and files can survive a reboot without needing to touch the internal disk.
What's New in Build 260718
The headline feature of the desktop environment in this release is Cinnamon 6.6.7-7.fc44, Fedora's own build of the desktop rather than a generic upstream package. Cinnamon has a reputation for being approachable and traditional in its layout, which suits a rescue system nicely: familiar menus, a taskbar, and no surprises when you're trying to fix something under pressure.
The most consequential change under the bonnet, according to the developer's own release notes, is that Refracta Snapshot has finally been made to work properly within Exton|Defender, and it now runs as a graphical application rather than something fiddlier. Refracta Snapshot is the tool that lets you take the live system exactly as you've configured it, wallpaper, installed packages, tweaks and all, and turn it into a brand-new ISO image of your own. In effect, it turns Exton|Defender into a personal Fedora 44 remastering kit: boot it, install or remove whatever software you fancy, run Refracta Snapshot, and a few minutes later you have your own custom Fedora Live system ready to hand out or keep.
There's a catch worth knowing about if you plan to use that feature: Refracta Snapshot only behaves correctly when the system is running on the developer's own custom kernel, built as 7.1.3-amd64-exton, rather than Fedora's stock kernel package. The advice is simply not to remove that kernel, or the boot symlinks pointing to it, before taking a snapshot.
The other genuinely new trick in Build 260718 is about how the system loads into memory. Earlier Exton|Defender releases based on Fedora would only run entirely from RAM if you booted them in old-fashioned Legacy BIOS mode; try it in UEFI mode and you would be stuck reading from the USB stick or DVD throughout the session. That limitation has now been overcome, at least on most hardware, meaning UEFI users can finally enjoy the same "load to RAM" speed boost that Legacy users have had all along. Once loaded, the whole system runs from memory and you can pull the USB stick or eject the disc entirely. The developer is candid that a handful of machines still won't manage it in UEFI mode for reasons that remain a bit of a mystery, so Legacy mode remains the fallback if RAM booting doesn't take.
Build 260718 also switches to the GDM login manager, and the developer notes it has been tested successfully on hardware as old as twenty years, which says something about how lean Fedora and Cinnamon can be kept when trimmed down for a purpose like this.
Getting It Running
Getting started is refreshingly uncomplicated. The default login is the user account liveuser with the password live, while the root password is simply root; if you'd rather log straight in as an administrator, GDM's login screen offers an "Other" option where you can type root directly.
For anyone flashing the ISO to a USB stick, the developer recommends Rufus, specifically version 4.15, and suggests setting aside a persistent partition of around three gigabytes during the write process. That persistence is the clever bit: rather than wrestling with a full hard-drive installation, which can be a touch fiddly on some machines, you can run Exton|Defender straight from the USB stick with all your changes, including full system upgrades via DNF, saved directly back onto the stick itself. The one caveat is that persistence currently only works when booting the stick in Legacy mode; UEFI booting is supported for a live session, but changes won't be retained that way.
If a permanent hard-drive installation is what you're after instead, Calamares handles it, and it's about as approachable as graphical installers get: launch it from the menu and follow the prompts. Calamares isn't installed by default on this build, so if you want to reuse it from within your finished system later on, a quick sudo dnf install calamares brings it back, with its configuration tucked away in /etc/calamares.
Once installed, either to a stick with persistence or to a proper hard drive, an update via sudo dnf upgrade will pull in the latest Fedora 44 packages, and Exton|Defender happily coexists with Fedora's own kernel once you're running from a hard disk. A Brief Closing Word
Build 260718 is a tidy, purposeful update rather than a dramatic reinvention, and that's rather the point. A rescue system earns its keep by being dependable, quick to boot, and stocked with the right tools, and this release quietly ticks all three boxes while adding a genuinely useful remastering workflow via Refracta Snapshot and a welcome speed boost for UEFI users. Whether it ends up saving a stricken hard drive or simply serving as a nimble everyday Fedora desktop, it's a solid addition to Arne Exton's long-running collection.
