In our earlier piece, Flying Solo, we looked at LinuxHub Prime as one of several solo-maintained distributions quietly innovating in the shadow of giants like Arch Linux and Debian. One of the details we touched on only briefly was Prime Builder, the tool that lets LinuxHub Prime users construct and export their own custom Arch-based respins. It felt worth a proper, hands-on look on its own terms, so this time we actually sat down, built something with its latest version, and put the result through its paces.


What Prime Builder Actually Does

Prime Builder is LinuxHub Prime's own respin tool, built around two well-established open-source foundations: archiso, the official Arch Linux tool for creating live installation media, and Calamares, the distribution-independent installer framework used by a huge range of Linux distributions. Put simply, it takes your current system, its themes, icons, wallpaper, and chosen software, and packages all of that into a bootable, installable ISO that carries your personal branding and configuration.


According to LinuxHub's own builder page, the recommended setup is an Arch Linux base with at least 8GB of memory and 80GB of storage, and the project is upfront about where the tool works best: a fresh install of either Arch Linux itself or LinuxHub Prime gives the most reliable results, other Arch-based distributions are hit and miss because of their own ISO customisations, and Manjaro-based systems simply aren't supported. It's a sensible bit of honesty from a solo maintainer setting realistic expectations rather than overselling what the tool can do.


Prime Builder isn't a separate download in the traditional sense; it lives inside LinuxHub Prime's own Prime Welcome Center, under a dedicated Builder tab, alongside links to video walkthroughs covering builds on related systems such as Omarchy, Archman, CachyOS, and StormOS. That placement matters. Rather than being a standalone project bolted onto the distribution, it's built into the everyday LinuxHub Prime experience, ready to use the moment you decide you want your own spin of the system you're already running.


Running the Builder, Step by Step

Getting started requires a handful of prerequisite packages: unzip, yad, wget, nemo, pluma, and lxterminal. Once those are in place, the whole tool is fetched and launched with a single line in a terminal, downloading a builder.zip archive, unzipping it, and running the included build.sh script. From there, Prime Builder walks you through the process interactively via a series of dialog windows, though it's honest about the fact that some manual editing is still required along the way.


The customisation stage is where the personal touches happen. Before running the builder, users are expected to prepare a custom wallpaper and save it into their Downloads folder renamed to default.jpeg, ready for the builder to pick up automatically. GIMP gets a starring role here too, used both for the desktop wallpaper and for the installer slide images that Calamares displays during setup, meaning the branding a builder creates carries all the way through to the install screen a future user will see. The builder also copies over themes and icons, both the ones already on the system and any sitting in the standard system folders, along with the user's own configuration directory, so a build genuinely reflects how its creator had their desktop set up.


Choosing what actually gets installed comes down to editing a straightforward packages list, adding the desired desktop environment under a clearly marked section before the build runs. According to the official video guide, adding a full desktop environment such as Plasma is comparatively simple this way, while building around a window manager is a noticeably more tedious job, since window manager setups typically rely on manually managed dotfiles and dependencies that the builder can't automate to the same degree. Once everything is configured, the final build step generates a uniquely named ISO file, ready to be tested, and depending on how many themes and icon sets get bundled in, that file can run to several gigabytes.


Putting It to the Test

To see all of this in practice, we ran a build ourselves, starting from a fresh LinuxHub Prime installation in a virtual machine configured to the project's own recommended specification of an Arch Linux base with 8GB of memory and 80GB of storage.

After downloading and saving a wallpaper as instructed, we opened the Prime Welcome Center, headed to the Builder tab, and launched Prime Builder proper.

The tool talked us through each stage much as the official documentation describes: an explanatory dialog outlining what would be copied from where, a prompt to install any additional software the build needed, a backup of the builder itself for safety, and a request to name the custom build. Rather than following the video's Plasma example, we opted for MATE instead, giving our test build the working title ArchMATE purely for the purposes of this exercise; it isn't a real LinuxHub product or a project name in its own right, just a label we chose to keep our test run identifiable.

From there we used GIMP to edit both the desktop wallpaper and the Calamares installer slide image, added mate to the packages list in a text editor, and moved on to fine-tuning: a series of optional steps covering desktop and program installation, pacman configuration, and the configuration, icon, and theme folders, each one skippable if you're happy with the defaults.

Worth reporting honestly: our first attempt at building the ISO didn't succeed, the output folder came back without the expected file, so we simply retried the build from where the tool left off. The second attempt completed properly, generating a working ISO in an output folder alongside the various build artefacts archiso produces along the way. It's a useful reminder of what using a tool maintained by one person, in their spare time, is actually like day to day: occasionally something needs a second go, and the process handles that gracefully rather than leaving you stuck.

With the ISO built, we transferred it by USB to a fresh virtual machine, this time bumped up to 16GB of memory to give the install itself some headroom, and booted it.

The boot menu correctly displayed our chosen name, and the Calamares installer that followed carried our custom slide image just as intended, walking through language, location, keyboard, partitioning, and user setup before installing cleanly.

Once rebooted, the finished system came up running MATE 1.28.2 on a current Arch kernel, complete with the custom wallpaper we'd set right at the start and the theme we'd chosen along the way, exactly as Prime Builder promised.

For a tool maintained by a solo developer, watching a fully personalised system come out the other end, wallpaper, theme, and desktop environment intact, was a genuinely satisfying result.


Conclusion

Prime Builder is a good example of what a single maintainer can achieve when they lean on solid upstream foundations rather than reinventing them: archiso and Calamares do the heavy lifting, while LinuxHub Prime's own tooling handles the personalisation on top. It isn't entirely hands-off, and our own run shows it isn't always perfectly smooth either, but it gets a genuinely custom, installable Linux system into your hands without needing to write a line of packaging code yourself.
