openKylin 3.0: A Kernel Leap Into the AI-Native Age

openKylin, the Chinese, Debian-family desktop distribution built around the custom Kylin and UKUI desktop environments, has officially released version 3.0. Announced on 28 August 2026 under the banner "Kernel Leap, AI-Native", this is described by the project as a generational upgrade rather than an incremental point release. It touches the kernel, the security model, the desktop experience and, most notably, the way artificial intelligence is woven into the operating system itself. openKylin uses APT for package management, ships in the deb format, and is available as a free download for anyone curious enough to give it a spin.
What follows is a straightforward, no-nonsense look at what has actually changed, drawn from openKylin's own release announcement and DistroWatch's release listing and package tables.
Kernel, Security and the Rust Rewrite
The headline change is the kernel itself. openKylin 3.0 jumps directly from Linux 6.6 to Linux 7.0, skipping several intermediate cycles in one move. Around that new kernel, the project says it has comprehensively upgraded more than 180 core components, aligning its core base libraries and compilation toolchains with the latest versions found upstream. The refreshed toolchain includes GCC 15, glibc 2.42, LLVM 22 and JDK 25, which together give developers building on openKylin access to genuinely current compiler and runtime infrastructure rather than ageing forks.
Security has had just as much attention as raw version numbers. openKylin 3.0 integrates all three of the NIST-standardised post-quantum cryptography algorithms: ML-KEM, ML-DSA and SLH-DSA. These are made available for system-level use through openHiTLS, openKylin's own open-source cryptographic suite, and are paired with a TPM-based trusted boot chain. The stated goal is a "chip-to-system" trust model that is ready before quantum computing becomes powerful enough to threaten today's encryption — a forward-looking piece of engineering rather than a reactive patch.
Memory safety gets a boost too, courtesy of Rust. The kernel layer now supports Rust for Linux, meaning developers can write peripheral drivers in Rust rather than C, which historically has been the source of a great many memory-related vulnerabilities. openKylin has also begun rewriting some of its own userspace tools in Rust, starting with wget and time, with the explicit aim of reducing memory-safety bugs at the source rather than patching them after the fact. It is a small but telling signal of where the project intends to take its toolchain over time.
Rounding out this side of the release, openKylin 3.0 adds support for 18 additional languages, including Korean, Thai, Arabic, Russian, German, Japanese and French. For a distribution that has historically been strongest in its home market, this is a clear and welcome step towards a genuinely international user base.
Building an AI-Native Operating System
The second pillar of openKylin 3.0, and arguably the more ambitious one, is what the project calls its "open foundation for intelligent agents". Rather than treating AI as a bolt-on application, openKylin 3.0 integrates models, memory, tools, system permissions and desktop capabilities into a single unified architecture. The framing the developers use is deliberate: agents are not applications installed into the system, but "native residents" that invoke system capabilities directly.
In practice, this means mainstream intelligent agents — KylinBot, WorkBuddy, OpenClaw and Raccoon Work are all named as compatible — can run fully on openKylin 3.0 and interact with the desktop through the MCP protocol, without resorting to simulated clicks or fragile screen-scraping tricks. The result, according to openKylin, is a full-chain autonomous execution loop of reasoning, decision, operation and feedback, whether the agent in question comes from the community itself or a third-party ecosystem. Every agent is said to receive equal system capabilities and runtime access, which is a notable design choice in an era where platform owners often favour their own first-party tools.
For developers, openKylin 3.0 introduces a unified AI SDK: one set of interfaces that adapts to multiple large language models, rather than forcing separate integrations for each provider. Skills built on top of this SDK can be submitted to the openKylin-skills repository and shared with the wider developer community, creating what the project describes as a loop of "download and use, develop and share". It is an approach clearly aimed at building an open ecosystem around agentic computing rather than a closed, vendor-locked one.
There is also a more consumer-facing incentive bundled in: a pre-installed "Token Center" client. After installing openKylin 3.0, users can log in, bind their device, and check in daily to receive token quotas for AI usage, with additional bonuses for inviting friends. Combined with agents such as KylinBot and OpenClaw being usable straight after installation, the intention is clearly to make AI feel available at boot rather than something the user has to go and configure themselves.
UKUI 4.24 and Full-Scenario Reach
On the desktop side, openKylin 3.0 ships the brand-new UKUI 4.24 environment, and the emphasis here is on multimodal interaction. Air gestures are a genuine feature rather than a gimmick tacked onto a press release: clenching a fist takes a screenshot, while waving a hand can turn pages or adjust the volume. Global voice input allows commands to be issued in a single sentence anywhere in the system, and a light swipe along the edge of the touchpad adjusts brightness, volume or playback progress. Accessibility has not been left behind either — system-level screen reading supports focus navigation and full-text following, with speech rate and volume that can be finely tuned.
The desktop has been refined in smaller but noticeable ways as well. The taskbar now uses a "three-island" layout, splitting data, applications and settings into separate zones so they no longer crowd each other. Dynamic wallpapers animate briefly at boot and unlock, and AI agent integration reaches into everyday workflows too: KylinBot task results, for instance, can be pushed straight to WeCom, Feishu and DingTalk, with AI operation results presented directly on the interface rather than buried in a log file somewhere.
Underpinning all of this is openKylin's continued commitment to multi-architecture support. Version 3.0 covers x86, ARM, RISC-V and LoongArch from a single source tree, and the project claims to offer some of the widest and most mature RISC-V support of any Linux desktop distribution, including compatibility with the latest RVA23 standard. AI inference on RISC-V hardware is optimised through RVV instructions, with FP32 workloads accelerated by two to five times and FP16 workloads by as much as 36.5 times — figures that matter a great deal for anyone running local AI inference on RISC-V silicon.
That multi-architecture ambition extends well beyond the traditional desktop. openKylin 3.0 supports embodied intelligence use cases such as the "Linglong" humanoid robot, AI unmanned vehicles and AI robotic arms, alongside multi-architecture industrial hardware platforms. It also targets mainstream AI PCs and portable AI terminals such as PocketClaw, offers high-performance builds for servers and workstations, and ships more than 20 Docker application images spanning AI, cloud computing and big data workloads. Few distributions attempt to span embedded robotics, desktop computing and server infrastructure with a single release; openKylin 3.0 is clearly aiming to be one of the exceptions.
On the practical side, DistroWatch lists openKylin 3.0 (build 3.0-20260827) with images available for x86_64 and arm64, distributed at roughly 7.6 to 7.7 gigabytes, using the deb package format with APT for management and a fixed release model.
The system ships with WPS Office as its default productivity suite and Firefox as its default browser, and continues to support Btrfs, ext4 and XFS filesystems.
For anyone already running the 3.0 Beta, an in-place update is available through System Settings; new users can download an ISO directly from the openKylin website, while developers can simply run an APT update and upgrade from the terminal. Reviewers on DistroWatch have rated the distribution highly, with an average score of 9.0 out of 10 across the reviews submitted so far.

openKylin 3.0 is not a distribution content to tick the usual boxes of a newer kernel and a refreshed desktop theme.
